How Scan and Groove works for your shop

Scan and Groove turns packaging you already buy into a way for your customers to hear independent music. A small scannable code goes on your cups, sleeves, boxes or bags. A customer points their phone at it and a real independent artist starts playing — no app, no download, no account. Here is exactly what happens, what you get, and what it costs.

The four steps in full

  1. 01

    Tell us about your spot.

Two minutes on the homepage form: shop name, city, what you serve, and what your packaging looks like. We use that to size the codes correctly for cups, sleeves, boxes or paper bags, and to build your branded scan page.

  2. 02

We send your codes and a sign.

You get a print-ready code image plus stickers if you want them, and a printable counter placard that explains the idea to customers in one line. Your existing packaging supplier can drop the code straight into their artwork at no extra cost — it is just ink.

  3. 03

Customers scan and an independent artist plays.

Each scan serves a fresh song from a human-reviewed independent artist, and cycles back around once a listener has heard them all. The page carries your shop's name and logo, so the moment belongs to your counter, not to a faceless platform.

  4. 04

    You get credit for it.

Your shop joins the public Shops that Groove directory, with a link back to you. Every scan also pays the artist, so the good you are doing is measurable rather than decorative.

What your shop receives

  • A print-ready scan code sized for cups, sleeves, boxes and bags, in the formats your packaging supplier expects.
  • Sticker sheets if you would rather apply codes to packaging you already have in the stockroom.
  • A printable counter placard that explains the idea to customers in a single line.
  • A branded scan page carrying your shop's name and logo, so every listen is attached to you.
  • A listing in the public Shops that Groove directory with a link back to your own page.

What the customer experiences

Someone waiting for a flat white notices the code on their cup and scans it out of curiosity. A song from an independent artist starts playing on their phone within a second or two — no app store, no email capture, no cookie wall. They see who the artist is, they see your shop's name on the page, and they can follow or support the artist in a tap.

The second scan gives them a different song. It keeps cycling through the roster and only repeats once they have heard everything. In practice it is a small, repeatable moment of delight at your counter — the kind of thing people show the person standing next to them.

What it costs, and what it requires

It costs nothing. We pay the independent artists per scan and we cover the code artwork and the placard. There is no card on file, no per-location fee and no minimum term. Down the road there may be an optional premium tier for shops that want to curate their own playlist or feature specific artists, but the version described on this page stays free.

It requires no hardware. No tablet, no speaker install, no POS integration, no staff training beyond "the code plays music". If your packaging is printed, the code is added to the artwork; if it is not, a sticker does the same job.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any hardware, speakers or a tablet?

No. Scan and Groove runs entirely on your customer's phone. There is no tablet, no speaker system, no staff login and nothing to plug in. The only physical items are the printed codes and the counter placard we send you.

Is it really free for shops?

Yes. It is free today while we grow the programme with shops. We pay the independent artists and we cover the codes and the printable sign. There is no card on file, so you will never get a surprise bill.

Does the music play out loud in my shop?

Only if you want it to. A scan starts a song on the customer's own phone, so it is a personal listen by default. Plenty of shops also put a code by the counter speaker and let staff play whatever a customer scanned.

What do customers actually see when they scan?

They land on a branded scan page carrying your shop's name and logo, with a song from an independent artist already playing. They can keep listening, follow the artist, or support them directly. No app download and no sign-up.

How long does signing up take?

About two minutes. You tell us your shop name, city and what kind of packaging you use, and we send back print-ready codes and a placard. Most shops are live within a few days of the codes arriving.

Can I stop at any time?

Yes. Stop putting the codes out and you are done — there is no contract, no notice period and no fee. Your shop is simply removed from the public directory on request.

Ready to put music on your packaging?

Tell us about your spot and we will send your codes and a printable sign. Free, and it takes about two minutes.
